Outdoor lighting and electrics on the Wirral

Garden lighting, outdoor sockets and power to sheds, garages and garden rooms, all weatherproof, RCD protected and certified.

Garden lighting being installed outdoors

Outdoor electrics have a harder life than anything inside. Rain, frost, sea air, spades and lawnmowers all take their toll, and on the Wirral the weather can be relentless. Done properly, outdoor lighting and power are safe and reliable for years; done badly, they are a shock risk and the usual reason a house trips every time it rains.

We install garden lighting, outdoor sockets and power supplies to sheds, garages, workshops and garden rooms across the Wirral, Merseyside and Chester. Every installation uses cable and fittings made for outdoor use, is protected by an RCD, and is tested and certified.

We also put right outdoor electrics that someone else has done badly: indoor cable clipped along a fence, sockets with broken covers, lights full of water. If you have inherited a garden full of questionable wiring, we will tell you honestly what can stay and what should go.

Outdoor jobs we do

From a single socket for the pressure washer to power for a garden office:

  • Garden and path lighting
  • Wall lights and PIR security lights
  • Weatherproof outdoor sockets
  • Power to sheds and workshops
  • Garage power and lighting
  • Garden rooms and home offices
  • Decking and patio lighting
  • Supplies for water features and pumps

What doing it properly means

The right cable. Cable running across a garden is normally steel wire armoured (SWA), buried at a suitable depth with warning tape above it, or clipped securely along a wall where it will not be damaged. Ordinary indoor cable or an extension lead through a window is not safe outdoors.

The right fittings. Lights and sockets outside need a suitable IP rating to keep water and dust out, and connections that stay sealed through a Wirral winter.

The right protection. Outdoor circuits must have 30mA RCD protection under BS 7671, the 18th Edition. Outbuildings usually get their own isolator or small consumer unit, and sometimes a separate earthing arrangement, which we assess on site.

How an outdoor job works

  1. Walk the garden

We look at what you want lit or powered, and plan the cable route with you to avoid beds, trees and paths.

  2. Clear quote

A written price, including who is digging any trench and how the ground is left.

  3. Install

Armoured cable, weatherproof fittings and a neat connection into your consumer unit.

  4. Test and certify

RCD and every circuit tested, certified, and notified under Part P where it is a new circuit.

Garden rooms, garages and workshops

A garden office or workshop often needs more than a single socket: lighting, several sockets, heating and perhaps a car charger at the same time. We size the supply for what you will actually use, fit a consumer unit in the building so it can be isolated on its own, and check your main fuse board can take the extra load. If you are planning an EV charger on the driveway, it is worth planning both together.

Outdoor sockets are one of the most useful small jobs we do. A weatherproof double socket on the back wall means no more extension leads trailing through the kitchen window for the lawnmower, hedge trimmer, pressure washer or patio heater. We fit them where they are handy but out of the way of splashes, with RCD protection and a lockable cover where you want one.

Good outdoor lighting is about more than brightness. We place lights to light steps and paths safely, keep glare out of neighbours’ windows, and use PIR sensors or timers so lights are only on when they are needed. Careful planning before a spade goes in is the Navy way, and it saves digging the garden up twice.

Outside lights tripping the power?

If your electrics trip when it rains, water is almost certainly getting into an outdoor light, socket or junction box. Leave the circuit off and get it checked. Our fault finding service will trace it and put it right.

Outdoor electrics questions

All questions

Can I run power to my shed or garden room?

Yes, done properly. Outdoor cables need to be the right type, buried at the right depth or fixed safely, and protected by an RCD, and the building needs its own isolator. We plan the route with you and certify the circuit when it is done.
