House rewiring on the Wirral

Full and part rewires for homes across the Wirral, Merseyside and Chester, planned around the way you live and finished with full certification.

A room stripped back to bare walls with cable chases and conduits cut in during a rewire

The wiring in your walls is the part of your home you never see, until it starts to let you down. A rewire replaces tired, unsafe or overloaded cabling with a modern installation built to the current wiring regulations, BS 7671 (the 18th Edition), so your home is safer and ready for the way you use electricity today.

We carry out full rewires, part rewires and upgrades, from a straightforward like-for-like job to a high-end installation with extra sockets, new lighting layouts and a new consumer unit. With 22 years in the trade and over 2,650+ jobs behind us, we know how to plan a rewire so it runs to time and causes as little upheaval as possible.

Not sure whether you need a full rewire? An EICR (electrical condition report) is often the best first step. It tells you honestly whether the whole house needs doing, just part of it, or only a few repairs.

Signs your home may need rewiring

Any one of these is worth getting checked by a registered electrician:

  • An old fuse box with rewirable fuses
  • Rubber, lead or fabric-covered cables
  • Round-pin or cracked sockets
  • Lights that flicker or dim
  • Frequent tripping or blown fuses
  • Scorch marks or a burning smell
  • Sockets or switches that feel warm
  • Not enough sockets, so extension leads everywhere
  • Wiring that has not been checked in 25 years or more

Full or part rewire?

A full rewire replaces every circuit in the house: cables, sockets, switches, light fittings and usually the consumer unit. It is the right answer when the wiring is old throughout, or when you are renovating and the walls and floors are already open.

A part rewire tackles only the circuits that need it, such as an extension, a loft conversion or a floor that has been altered over the years. We test what is staying so you know it is sound, and we will tell you plainly which option makes sense for your property, not the one that makes the biggest invoice.

Most rewires include a new consumer unit with RCD protection, and it is the ideal time to add the extra sockets, outside power or new lighting you have always wanted.

How a rewire works

  1. Survey and quote

We visit, look at the existing wiring and talk through where you want sockets and lights. You get a clear written quote and a timescale.

  2. First fix

Floorboards lifted and walls chased where needed, then new cables run to every point, with rooms done in a sensible order.

  3. Second fix

Once plastering is done, we fit sockets, switches, lights and the consumer unit, and connect everything up.

  4. Test and certify

Every circuit is tested. You get an Electrical Installation Certificate and the work is notified to building control under Part P.

Living at home during a rewire

Many of our customers stay in their homes while we work. We agree a plan with you before we start, work room by room where the layout allows, and restore power at the end of each day wherever we can. Dust sheets go down, and we tidy up as we go.

A rewire does mean some disruption: floorboards come up and cables are chased into walls, which then need plastering and decorating. We explain exactly what to expect beforehand, including who is making good the walls, so there are no surprises halfway through. It is the kind of planning and discipline the Navy taught us, and it is why rewires tend to run smoothly.

Landlords use us too. One told us we had done “a number of rewires and EICRs” on their residential properties, and we are used to working around tenants, agents and empty-property schedules.

Rewiring is notifiable work

Under Part P of the Building Regulations, a rewire must be done by a registered electrician or approved by building control. We are NAPIT approved and Part P registered, so the notification and certificate are handled for you. Keep them safe: buyers’ solicitors will ask for them when you sell.

Rewiring questions

All questions

Are you a registered electrician?

Yes. We are NAPIT approved and registered under the Part P competent person scheme, so notifiable work is certified and registered with building control for you. Every job is tested and you get the right certificate for it: an Electrical Installation Certificate for new circuits and rewires, a Minor Works Certificate for smaller jobs, or an EICR for an inspection.

Do you give free quotes?

Yes. Tell us what you need by phone, WhatsApp or the form on this site and we will give you a clear quote before any work starts. For bigger jobs such as a rewire we come and look first, so the price is based on your actual property, not a guess.

How do I know if my house needs rewiring?

Common signs are an old fuse box with rewirable fuses, rubber or fabric-covered cables, round-pin or cracked sockets, lights that flicker, frequent tripping, burning smells, or not enough sockets for modern life. Wiring more than about 25 to 30 years old is also worth checking. An EICR is the best first step: it tells you whether you need a full rewire, a part rewire or just a few repairs.

Can I stay in my home during a rewire?

Often, yes. We plan the work room by room where we can, restore power at the end of each day wherever possible and keep dust and disruption down. For a full rewire of an occupied house we talk it through with you first, so you know exactly what each day looks like.

How long does a full rewire take?

It depends on the size of the property, how easy the floors and walls are to get into and whether it is empty. We give you a timescale with the quote after we have seen the house, and stick to it.

Tell us roughly how big the property is, how old the wiring is and whether it is lived in. We will arrange a time to come and look, then give you a clear written quote.

For example: three-bed semi, old fuse box, looking at a full rewire. Or: kitchen being fitted next month, need a new cooker circuit and spotlights.
