Electric gate electrics on the Wirral

Power supplies, wiring and electrical repairs for electric gates, so they open and close reliably and safely.

An electrician working on a metal gate

An electric gate is only as reliable as the power behind it. A supply run in the wrong cable, a waterlogged junction box or a connection that has worked loose will leave the gate stuck, or tripping the power to the rest of the house.

We handle the electrical side of electric gates across the Wirral, Merseyside and Chester: new supplies for gates being installed, wiring to motors and control panels, and tracing and repairing electrical faults on existing gates. We work with homeowners, businesses and gate installers, and every circuit is tested and certified.

Gate electrics tend to fail in predictable ways. Water finds its way into a junction box at the bottom of a post. A cable laid too shallow gets clipped by a spade or crushed under a drive. Connections corrode in the salty air along the coast. Or the gate was wired from a nearby socket with cable never meant to be outside. Each of these can be traced and put right properly, and done right the first time, they should not come back.

Electric gate work we do

The electrical jobs behind a gate that just works:

  • New power supplies to gate motors
  • Armoured cable runs across drives
  • Isolation and RCD protection
  • Wiring to control panels
  • Electrical fault finding on gates
  • Water ingress and corroded connections
  • Gates that trip the house electrics
  • Supplies for lighting at the gate

A proper supply for the gate

Gate motors sit outside all year, often at the far end of a drive. The supply to them needs to be steel wire armoured cable, buried at a suitable depth or fixed where it will not be damaged, and terminated in weatherproof enclosures. It needs a local isolator so the gate can be worked on safely, and RCD protection as the 18th Edition wiring regulations, BS 7671, require for outdoor circuits.

If the gate is being installed as part of a new drive, the cheapest time to lay the cable is before the surface goes down. Talk to us early and we will plan the route with you or your groundworker.

A new circuit for a gate is notifiable under Part P, and as a NAPIT approved, Part P registered electrician we handle that and give you the certificate.

How we tackle a gate fault

  1. Describe the problem

What the gate is doing, and whether the rest of the house trips. A video helps.

  2. Check the supply

We test from the consumer unit to the gate, including the cable, isolator and junction boxes.

  3. Repair

Water ingress, damaged cable and failed connections put right with weatherproof parts.

  4. Test

The circuit is retested and the repair recorded, so you know it is safe.

Electrical faults and mechanical faults

When a gate stops working, the cause can be electrical or mechanical. We find and fix electrical faults: no power at the motor, a supply that trips, water in the connections, damaged cables. If our testing shows the supply is sound and the problem is in the gate itself, such as its hinges, rams, motor gearbox or programming, we will tell you honestly so you can call your gate installer, rather than charging you to guess.

That straight answer is part of how we work, along with the methodical approach to fault finding the Navy taught us. For faults elsewhere in the house, see our fault finding page.

Keep gate safety devices working

Automated gates rely on safety devices such as photocells and safety edges to stop them closing on people, children or cars. If yours have been disconnected or are not working, stop using the automatic function and have the gate installer check them. We can make sure the electrical supply is safe while you do.

Adding lighting along the drive at the same time? One cable trench can often serve both.

Electric gate questions

All questions

Can I run power to my shed or garden room?

Yes, done properly. Outdoor cables need to be the right type, buried at the right depth or fixed safely, and protected by an RCD, and the building needs its own isolator. We plan the route with you and certify the circuit when it is done.

Get help with your gate

Tell us whether it is a new supply or a fault, what the gate is doing and roughly where you are. A photo or short video helps us come back with the next step.

10% off for blue light and care sector workers. Just mention it.

For example: three-bed semi, old fuse box, looking at a full rewire. Or: kitchen being fitted next month, need a new cooker circuit and spotlights.
